Places Between
Through Places Between I aim to facilitates discovery and a sense of still, childlike wonder, while maintaining an underlying tension that we experience as adults trying to return to this state. In this work I have constructed ambiguous dreamlike narratives which draw from representations of dreams in popular literature and film. Playing with scale, the work contains miniature worlds within the larger immersive installation. Lighting acts to draw the eye to the uncanny scenes within these tent-like structures. As a result, a barrier exists for the viewer so that both physical and imaginative engagement is required enter the space fully. This tension is drawn from my own experiences of trying to return to a state of imaginative play as an adult. It is no longer fully accessible but is experienced only indirectly through hazy memory. This work functions in the larger space of enchantment installation and is informed by the literary movement of magic realism.
